About
Oscar Humphries is a curator who produces and designs art exhibitions, working with public and private institutions, museums, and galleries. His focus is on exhibitions that often combine art and architecture, or on art installed in locations that are exceptional for their cultural significance or natural beauty.
At architect Luis Barragán’s modernist masterpiece, Cuadra San Cristóbal in Mexico City (which still functions as an equestrian estate), Humphries curated, produced, and designed the largest exhibition of Sean Scully’s work ever held in Central America—the first exhibition ever to be staged at this celebrated site. Two years later, in 2020, he returned to San Cristóbal to curate, produce, and design an exhibition for the land artist Richard Long.
Also in 2020, in collaboration with the municipality of St. Moritz and the artist’s studio, Humphries produced Damien Hirst’s largest-ever exhibition in Switzerland, staged across multiple civic venues and outdoor spaces. The exhibition included the installation of Hirst’s monumental four-metre bronze sculpture The Monk on the frozen lake of St. Moritz. He has curated exhibitions for museums, including the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf and the Benaki Museum in Athens. When exhibiting at Frieze Masters as an independent dealer, he has focused on ceramics, including presentations on Sèvres porcelain and, in 2022, the British designer Christopher Dresser.
Formerly Editor of the art magazine Apollo, Humphries continues to write on art. His books include Between the Lines: Sean Scully (as both author and editor) and François Halard: 50 Days in Arles (as author). He has also published and designed several limited-edition books on turn-of-the-century design, a longstanding passion.
